<p>Yesterday, April 30th, was my <strong>57th birthday</strong>. Did I mention I have the <strong>best abs of my life</strong> these past 12 months and now? It was getting late in the afternoon and it was my birthday, after all, so instead of driving to my usual beach workout venue, I stayed within brisk walking distance of home. This is what I have dubbed &#8220;Sprint Hill&#8221; or just &#8220;The Hill&#8221;. More than 4 years ago, I used to walk up The Hill, pausing at the top before continuing the walk which slopes gently up a bit more, then descends down to the beach. Now, when I do this local venue, I sprint up The Hill multiple times before walking the brief gentle upslope and the descent to the beach. After 4 or 5 sprints up The Hill in rapid succession - the last 2 were the strongest &#8211; I continued the walk down to the beach. There, I did 6 sprints in the soft sand. Sprint, walk, sprint, walk, etc., for a cycle of 6 sprints - all in the soft sand, before returning to the pavement for the rest of the walk. What was interesting was that I kept up with the steady pace soft sand joggers who were  in the same area of the beach even though I was walking part of the time. Of course, their total distance was farther, as their jogs were already in progress when I started my sprint-walk-sprint cycles. I enjoy sprints. There are studies exhorting the <strong>metabolic and other benefits of sprints</strong>. They just intuitively feel right to me. The sprint-walk-sprint, etc., cycle is a version of <strong>interval training</strong>. The steep incline of The Hill and the soft sand of the beach just add to the challenge. <strong>Steep inclines</strong> not only up the<strong> cardio</strong> and <strong>lower body</strong> challenges, but they also engage the <a href="http://www.roberthenryfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/IMAG0541-1-1.jpg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-749" title="IMAG0541-1-1" src="http://www.roberthenryfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/IMAG0541-1-1-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a><strong>abs </strong>and <strong>core</strong>. So, once again, I encourage <strong>&#8220;Incline It, Baby&#8221;.</strong></p>
<p>It&#8217;s encouraging &#8211; more like exhilarating &#8211; to come back to an &#8220;old&#8221; exercise venue and find it less challenging than you left it. That is, until you come up with new ways to challenge yourself. I am again reminded of <strong>&#8220;The Fitness Continuum&#8221;</strong> and, seeing as how this was my birthday, of<strong> &#8220;Age Re-Defined&#8221; (the title of my eBook).</strong></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In my eBook, &#8220;Age Re-Defined: Take Control of Your Health, How You Look, And How You Feel &#8211; <em>Even In Your Forties &amp; Fifties&#8221;, </em>I wrote, as a Certified Wellness Coach, about the various components of wellness. (I also wrote in &#8220;Age Re-Defined&#8221; about the various components of fitness.)</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve written here, in my eBook, and elsewhere about the mental and emotional benefits of exercise. Wellness also includes inner strength, inner peace, inner tranquility. Exercise is a natural anti-depressant and a natural de-stressor, so it contributes in that sense to inner strength. But that&#8217;s only part of the mix. Inner strength/peace can be nurtured through meditation, fellowship, nature experiences (e.g., hikes, a walk on the beach), hobbies, etc.</p>
<p>When I was a kid in school, I would usually take any opportunity in writing assignments to write about flying, one of my passions. This blog post is no exception! I took my first flying lesson at the age of 14 and was an instructor at 19, so flying has deep roots in yours truly. Even when flying professionally as a job, the aesthetics of flight were always there to enjoy to one degree or another: the beauty of a Rocky Mountain sunrise from 40,000 feet, a Gulf of Mexico / Florida Coast sunrise from 30,000 feet on descent into Miami after flying in the darkness from Los Angeles (the lights of New Orleans, the darkness of the Gulf and&#8230;the beginning of the sunrise and the Florida coast starting to come into view), the glow of Las Vegas from 150+ miles away on an otherwise dark night. That sort of thing.</p>
<p>Last weekend, despite a hiatus from professional aviation for many months, I had the opportunity to go flying in a privately owned and operated turboprop aircraft with a longtime aviation colleague and former flying student of mine. It was great and a mood-booster. I think the photo conveys the sentiment. And flying a complex aircraft in busy airspace is exercise for the brain, too.</p>
<p>Okay, I got to write about flying. The bigger picture here is to include in your pursuit of wellness things which relax you and which nurture the inner you. You&#8217;ll know it when you experience it: relaxation, elation, feeling better, feeling nourished, feeling as if you were just in contact with some part of your inner self and it was good. It can &#8211; and usually is &#8211; a simple thing. The simple but profound sunset at the beach or at some other scenic location, for example. A walk in a park or on a walking or hiking trail. Meditation. <a href="http://www.roberthenryfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/KSMO.707AV.4.20.13.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-721" title="KSMO.707AV.4.20.13" src="http://www.roberthenryfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/KSMO.707AV.4.20.13-300x289.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="289" /></a>A good conversation. Music. Dance. Even a good read. A quiet, starry night sky. One of the starriest skies I ever observed without being in an airplane was on Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California.</p>

<p>Robert Henry Fitness is physically located in the Playa del Rey section of Los Angeles. I have independent trainer privileges at two gyms. Other gyms are also possible. I enjoy training outdoors. We can train in your home or home gym.</p>
<p>A reminder from my Certifications page that I am a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a Certified Personal Trainer (CPT), a Certified Specialist in Fitness Nutrition, and a Certified Wellness Coach. I&#8217;ve been a personal training client, so I know what it&#8217;s like to be the client.</p>
